Mixed feelings on seeing Davie go

ESPN.com

After five seasons as head coach at Notre Dame, Bob Davie was fired Sunday.

Davie_Bob
Bob Davie had a 35-25 career record at Notre Dame
Considering that the firing came one year after Davie was given a five-year extension after guiding the Irish to a BCS bowl game, we wondered what ESPN.com users thought about the move. So we asked: Was firing Bob Davie the best thing for Notre Dame?

And just as fans are seldom neutral about how they feel about the Irish, there wasn't much fence-sitting when it came to Davie, either.

Following is a sampling of user responses:

Absolutely this was the right thing to do. Davie had lost the confidence of the students, alumni. With his comments of the last few days, he also lost my respect. The Irish need to go in a new direction. Not because we are Notre Dame, but because so many people look up to Notre Dame for excellence in all it does.
Ted Brauch
Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

As a third generation Domer, one who has bled blue and gold since birth, this is the greatest thing to happen to Irish football in the past 10 years. Davie never understood what it took to be the head coach here. The coach has to be well-versed in and respect the tradition. Davie never did, and he never appealed to the student body or the alumni. No coach can win here without doing that. Bottom line, he was the wrong coach in the first place, and his departure comes two years too late for my liking.

South Bend, Ind.

If Notre Dame's going to fire Bob Davie, then they should clean house and fire anyone who's got anything to do with Notre Dame football, including the AD. The Irish have always played football as a bunch of throwbacks, but now they're coaching and recruiting like throwbacks, too. As everyone knows, it's good for players to be throwbacks, but not so much for their coaches and administrators.
Brad Mader
State College, Penn.

Is it the best for Notre Dame as a school? No. As a football program? Yes. As universities try to blend sports with academics, they must try to find a balance. For the school, it is not good because I feel they are saying we want to win more than we want to protect the academic image of Notre Dame. It is good for the football program because if they want to remain independent and challenge for the national title each year, then they do need a change. But they better be careful what they ask for they just might get it.
Jim Kruspe,
Lexington, Ky.

I have just lost a lot of respect for the university of Notre Dame. Coach Davie is a quality person and runs a clean program. The university put in place stricter academic standards and coach Davie's teams answered with the highest team GPAs in recent history. He was dedicated to his profession and loved Notre Dame. To see things unfold the way they did is unfortunate. He went down fighting and I have all the respect in the world for him.

As a student at Notre Dame, I have no argument that Bob Davie tried his best at coaching. But it's not all about coaching at Notre Dame. It's about the tradition and the legend, and he just never really got it. He didn't seem to care that he was at maybe the most energized campus in the country. He didn't care about the students and didn't like the alumni. ... Bob Davie simply doesn't embody any of the magic that Notre Dame is about. And then of course there's the running up the middle.....

South Bend, Ind.

It all just goes to show you how quick people can turn on you. Less than a year after taking a team with a true freshman quarterback to a BCS bowl, they fire him. Notre Dame had a string of bad luck this year and all the blame should not be pinned on Davie.
Jim DeMay
Aurora, Ohio

The problem isn't Davie. The problem is the schedule. When do we get to play Troy State, Prairie View, Duke, etc.? You need to be bowl eligible to get the extra three weeks of practice to bring along your underclassmen. Load up on cheap wins and stop playing this killer schedule.

To think that there was any other choice in the firing of coach Bob Davie is just ludicrous. ... Notre Dame is the college football mecca. Notice I didn't say 'was.' We still are the college football mecca and now that Davie is gone and a qualified person will be named head coach, the greatness will be returned to South Bend. Notre Dame football is now back!

Davie had the third-worst winning percentage in Notre Dame history. He just couldn't win enough games. Bottom line. You have to win more if you're going to be the head coach of the most storied program in college football. ... The allure seems to be gone because Davie wrecked it, ruined it because he couldn't get the job done. The mystique isn't dead, it's just sleeping. It's just been too embarrassed to come out and shine on a lousy football team.

Bob Davie is a good coach, just not a Notre Dame coach, plain and simple. We need someone to light a fire in the eyes of the players, alumni, and fans.

By the Irish making this move, they are admitting that they are human and make mistakes. Bob Davie should never have beed rewarded with a five-year contract extension after having one good season.

I do not feel Notre Dame made the right move. ... I am sick of the "What-have-you-done-for-me-lately?" complex that many owners and academic institutions have.
Nathan Grossoehme
St. Bonifaicus, Minn.

The bottom line is that he gave a commitment to the university and it wasn't reciprocated. That's fine, but I don't want to hear people bashing coaches when they go from job to job.
Josh Berkman

The worst thing that could have happened was winning so many games last year and extending his contract.
Richard Noggin

Obviously, firing Davie at this time was the only acceptable thing to do. Notre Dame has the opportunity to get a real football coach to come and them back to prominence. ... Today has been a monumental day for those who love Notre Dame, I fully expect to see them in the national championship game within three years. Way to go.
Craig Adcock
Lexington, N.C.

Notre Dame has made the right decision. Bob Davie was not capable of coaching at this university from Day 1. He put in a lot of effort, but it was not going to make up for his lack of "Notre Dame blood." To coach at Notre Dame takes more than football smarts, and great recruiting; it takes something that Bob Davie just never had -- a true love and a true respect for the tradition and the meaning of the football team and this university.
Pete Montenaro
South Bend, Ind.

Fired one season after signing a five-year extension? Short-sighted and dishonorable to say the least. The Dome is definitely tarnished.
Eugene O'Keeffe
Cranford, N.J.

Being a senior at Notre Dame, I have seen first hand the damage Bob Davie has done to this program. While he may not be a bad guy or a bad coach at another school, he was not a good fit here. The coach at Notre Dame must realize what a special place it is and must use that to his advantage when recruiting and coaching. That may have been Bob Davie's biggest mistake. He never fully grasped the magic of this place and thought it was just another college program. So, a memo to the new coach: Love Notre Dame and she will love you back.
Sean Sullivan
South Bend, Ind.

Coach Davie accomplished something during his tenure as head football coach that I never thought possible: He caused me to cease caring about Notre Dame football.

Since Notre Dame signed the big deal with NBC ...

  • NBC: Not Been Competitive;

  • NBC: Not Been Creative;

  • NBC: Not Been Consistant.

    Most Importantly ...

  • NBC: Not Been Champion!

And now poor Mr. Davie ... Not Be Coach!
    Mike Tierney
    Mission Viejo, Calif.

Everyone in the media seems to be painting Davie as the victim and Notre Dame as a villian. The fact of the matter is he didn't get the job done. He was given the contract extension last year when the Irish were 9-2, but after that they were stomped by Oregon State and have looked completely flat since.
    Alan Wagner
    Winona Lake, Ind.

Firing Bob Davie could not make me any happier as a Notre Dame fan. What thrills me even more is the school decided to get rid of the good-for-nothing assistants he had as well.
    Joey Smith
    St. Albans, W.V.

Was coach Davie treated unfairly? Yes. Did coach Davie do a great job of recruiting? Yes. Did coach Davie win football games? No. Yes, in his five years as head coach at Notre Dame, Davie did have his plusses, but the fact is he could not win games.
    Eric Henry
