AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State's Angie Welle scored so often and
so easily against her shorter defenders that she almost felt sorry
for them.
Welle dominated inside with 20 points and 11 rebounds as No. 7
Iowa State shrugged off a slow start to beat Texas-Pan American
91-59 on Thursday night.
With no one taller than 6 feet, Texas-Pan American (3-6) had no
answer for the 6-4 Welle, who made her first six shots, beat the Broncos down the floor for layups and finished 8-of-10 while
playing only 22 minutes.
"Sometimes in that situation, I feel bad for the team," said
Welle, who's shooting 68 percent for the season. "It would be like
me trying to guard someone who's 6-8. Even when they were
double-teaming, it was with two 6-foot players."
At which point Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly interjected,
"She's got to get over that."
Even so, Welle did not turn down any shots against the
overmatched Lady Broncos and earned her fourth double-double of the
season.
"The guards do a great job noticing the mismatches," she said.
"Sometimes I can't even tell who's guarding me. The guards are the
ones who see the mismatches."
Erica Junod added 15 points for Iowa State (6-0), which went
scoreless on its first seven possessions and did not start pulling
away until late in the first half. Lindsey Wilson scored 14, making
all four of her shots, and Tracy Gahan had 11.
Cheveron Terry led Texas-Pan American with 18 points and
Alexandra Gravel scored 13.
"The depth killed us on the inside," Texas-Pan American coach
Karin Nicholls said. "They started scoring a lot of easy buckets
in the paint. We got into major foul trouble; it was 10 fouls to
one. So I think all of those factors right there played into Iowa
State's hands."
Playing for the second straight night, Iowa State took a while
to get going. In its 88-58 victory over Drake on Wednesday night,
Iowa State led 17-0 less than three minutes into the game. At the
same point against Texas-Pan American, the Cyclones had five
turnovers and trailed 2-0.
Texas-Pan American, which in 17 years of women's basketball has
never had a winning season, trailed only 16-15 midway through the
first half and was down just 24-22 with six minutes left in the
half.
"That was what we talked about before the game, that we had to
come out and play and do all the same things," Fennelly said. "It
was hard. The crowd, everybody was just kind of waiting to see what
happened."
Finally, something did.
Gahan and Megan Taylor each hit 3-pointers and Welle converted a
three-point play in a 13-2 run that opened it up. Another 3-pointer
by Gahan made it 40-27, and Iowa State led 44-29 at halftime.
It would not get any closer. Wilson had seven points as Iowa
State began the second half with an 11-2 run to go up 55-31.
Moments later, Welle hit a turnaround jumper for her final basket
to start a 17-3 burst that stretched the lead to 72-38.
The teams just played it out after that and there was little to
excite the crowd until reserve Sarah Robson hit a 3-pointer with
2:08 left. That produced the biggest roar of the night and gave
Iowa State its biggest lead, 91-54.
