BOSTON (AP) -- Ninth-ranked Rutgers overcame first-half jitters to burst past Northeastern for a 60-49 victory Friday night.

"We definitely came out in the second half and played with more of a sense of urgency," Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer said. "Give credit to Northeastern, they played us tough."

Northeastern hampered itself by making only 14 of 26 foul shots.

"Our lack of depth certainly hurt us," coach Willette White said. "We didn't help ourselves with our free throw shooting, either. We were horrible from the line."

Tammy Sutton-Brown's 15 points helped Rutgers overcome its sluggish start. Rutgers (5-1) trailed by eight points in the first half and was down 26-24 at the break.

But Northeastern (2-3) made just six of 23 shots (26.1 percent) in the second half while Rutgers hit 16 of 25 (64 percent).

Davalyn Cunningham added 14 points and nine rebounds for Rutgers and Karlita Washington had 12 points.

Melissa Kowalski scored 16 points for the Huskies. Genny Caruso had 13 points and Lani Lawrence had 11 rebounds and eight points.

Rutgers scored nine straight points to take a 36-29 edge with 14:43 left and never trailed again.

A pair of free throws by Joi Jefferson pulled Northeastern within 50-46 with 4:40 left.

The teams then traded baskets before Rutgers ended the game on an 8-1 run.
