Six Tigers score in double figures
|
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- Duke coach Gail Goestenkors saw how focused the Clemson players were during the warmups. She thought her Blue Devils might be in for a battle with the unranked Tigers.
And take them on Clemson did, with six players scoring in double figures in a 93-75 victory Saturday, while holding No. 3 Duke to just 36.5 percent shooting.
"They were just mentally and physically much tougher than we
were today," Goestenkors said.
Chrissy Floyd scored 23 points in the Atlantic Coast Conference
opener for both teams. Clemson (5-2), was not intimidated by Duke's
high ranking, she said.
"Oh no, we were ready to go out, we had so much intensity,"
Floyd said.
Clemson coach Jim Davis called it a great win for his team.
"We've got two losses, but this basketball team is enjoying
every day," he said. "We've got the athleticism, I think, to
really create some problems for other people."
Duke (9-1), which was off to its best since the 1987-88 season,
might have suffered from playing lesser opponents after opening
with wins over nationally ranked LSU, Penn State and Boston
College.
"We've been able to get away with not doing a lot of the little
things well. And Clemson made us pay for all the little mistakes
that we made," she said.
"Overrated! Overrated!" Clemson fans chanted as the clock
wound down.
Clemson outrebounded Duke 38-35, something that pleased Davis
even more than putting six players in double figures.
"We outrebounded somebody?" he asked.
Clemson shot 48 percent for the game, including 15-of-29 in the
second half.
In addition to Floyd's 23 points, Erin Batth added 14, Marci
Glenney put in 13, and Nuria Forns, Krystal Scott, and Lake Stokes
had 10 each.
Forward Alana Beard led Duke with 18 points, but fouled out with
2:05 remaining. Georgia Schweitzer added 12 and Rochelle Parent and
Iciss Tillis had 10 apiece.
