DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Iowa State prepared for Duke's Georgia Schweitzer. The Cyclones should have been keeping an eye on Alana Beard.

Tracy Gahan (22) and Rometra Craig battle for a loose ball.

Beard scored 27 points, including eight in the final six minutes, as Duke (No. 5 ESPN/USA Today, No. 6 AP) pulled away late for an 81-63 victory over Iowa State (No. 6 ESPN/USA Today, No. 5 AP).

"She's quicker than we are, and we didn't really expect her to shoot as much as she did," Iowa State's Megan Taylor said. "She did everything a great player can do, and we just didn't expect that of her." Schweitzer scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half and Iciss Tillis added 14 points as Duke (12-1) won its third straight game since a 93-75 loss at Clemson on Dec. 9. Schweitzer added six assists and eight rebounds.

It was Iowa State's first regular season loss since a 79-71 decision to Kansas on Feb. 16.

Angie Welle hit six of nine shots for 15 points for Iowa State (9-1). Megan Taylor had 14 points, Erica Junod added 12 and Lindsey Wilson had 10.

Duke had a 37-24 edge in rebounds, marking the first time Iowa State was outrebounded this season.

"They're so much quicker than us, and in women's basketball, the rebounds are below the rim," Iowa State Bill Fennelly said. "So even being one step quicker is a big advantage in rebounding."

Iowa State was within 51-50 after Taylor's jumper with 12:20 to play, but Duke's Michele Matyasovsky came off the bench for two baskets to start a 20-6 run over the next 2:02 to put the game out of reach.

"I think both teams were exhausted about then (at 51-50), and our pressure defense finally started to wear them down and hurt them toward the end," Duke's Gail Goestenkors said. "That, and we started to do a better job attacking their zone."

Beard hit five of six shots in the final nine minutes and was 12-for-20 overall.

"I just got good looks at the basket," Beard said. "When you get into the flow of a game, you don't think about how many shots you're taking."

Duke opened an 18-8 lead early, but missed 13 of 16 shots, including 11 in a row, as Iowa State whittled away the lead. Wilson's layup at the buzzer cut Duke's lead to 34-32 at the half.

Duke shot 67 percent in the second half, while Iowa State made just 10 of 26 second-half shots as the Blue Devils pulled away.

"They just kept hitting and scoring in the second half, and we didn't," Taylor said. "We started rushing things, took some bad shots and started playing their game."
