STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -- Nicole Powell was asked to make a big adjustment in two days. She rose to the occasion.

As a result, Stanford (No. 21 ESPN/USA Today, No. 17 AP) defeated previously undefeated Utah (No. 23 AP) 72-58 on Saturday.

Powell, a 6-foot-2 freshman, became Stanford's third starting point guard of the season after a right knee injury during Wednesday night's game against Oklahoma sidelined freshman Susan King for the rest of the season.

Powell began working out as a point guard on Thursday. She had nine assists and nine rebounds to go with her 11 points.

Lindsay Yamasaki led the Cardinal with 16 points. Bethany Donaphin added 11 points as Stanford (6-4) improved to 6-0 at home and snapped a three-game losing streak.

Lindsay Herbert scored 12 points to lead Utah (11-1), which was off to its best start in three years.

Yamasaki hit a jumper to open the second half to give Stanford its first lead since early in the game, but the Utes responded with a 14-5 run to take a 48-40 edge six minutes later.

The Cardinal regained the lead with 11:15 remaining to play on a three-pointer by Enjoli Izidor, who scored seven points during a 13-0 run that extended Stanford's lead to 53-48.

"We did a lot of good things, but we were outmanned," said Utah coach Elaine Elliott.

Utah was held without a field goal for over eight minutes during the Cardinal's rally. Stanford continued to extend its lead the rest of the way.
