his team play better, and the Cyclones responded.

Angie Welle had 18 points and 15 rebounds for her sixth
double-double of the season as No. 7 Iowa State beat Kansas State
84-58 in the Big 12 Conference opener for both teams Wednesday
night.
The Cyclones won in Manhattan for the first time since 1998 and
snapped Kansas State's eight-game winning streak.
The victory came on the heels of an 81-63 loss at No. 6 Duke on
Saturday. Fennelly dissected the film of the defeat to Duke and
warned the Cyclones that there would be plenty of sad nights ahead
if the team did not improve.
"Without a question, that was one of the best performances all
season," Fennelly said. "Especially after that loss and going on
the road to Manhattan where everyone knows we haven't played well.
I asked them to decide after losing to Duke if that was the kind of
team they wanted to be. And they didn't want to be remembered that
way."
Iowa State (10-1, 1-0 Big 12) made six of its first eight shots
en route to a 17-8 lead with 12:35 left in the half.
Kristin Rethman hit a 3-pointer for Kansas State (10-2, 0-1)
with 8:46 left as the Wildcats closed to 22-17. Nicole Ohlde
scored on a layup to cut the deficit to three, but Kansas State was
not able to complete its comeback.
Welle initiated a 9-0 run with 5:51 remaining that put the
Wildcats away.
"Angie was into this game today," Fennelly said. "She didn't
have a particularly good rebounding game against Duke so she was
determined. She missed more shots in the paint then she has all
season tonight. But she still kept playing hard."
The Cyclones added to a 16-point halftime lead with a 13-3 run
at the start of the second half and led by as many as 30.
"We really tried to take away their go-to people," Welle said.
"We were so eager to play this game after that loss. It was
discouraging the way we played."
Lindsey Wilson had 14 points for Iowa State. Erica Haugen added
13 and Tracey Gahan had 13 points and eight rebounds.
Andrea Armstrong had 16 points for the Wildcats.
"I think it's extremely disheartening any night you go out and
get beat," Kansas State coach Deb Patterson said. "A 30-point
game is really going to hurt. Call me crazy, I really saw a lot of
signs of hope."
