AUBURN, Alabama (Ticker) -- LaRita Spencer scored 17 points as
19th-ranked Auburn built a big lead and coasted to a 73-40 rout
of Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference opener for both
schools. Lori Nero added 14 points and Tasha Hamilton had 12 and 12 rebounds for the Tigers, (13-2, 1-0 SEC), who avoided a third straight loss after winning their first 12 games of the season. The Tigers had a 16-11 lead with under 13 minutes left in the first half before outscoring Kentucky, 20-9, to open a 36-20 at the break. Hamilton had 11 points over the first 20 minutes. Auburn shot 43.5 percent (30-of-69) and held a lopsided 51-28 rebounding advantage. The Tigers also forced Kentucky into 19 turnovers. LaTonya McDole scored 17 points and Kristin Hawthorne chipped in 11 for Kentucky (4-8, 0-1 SEC), which shot 35 percent (17-of-48).
