Wildcats pounce on Cardinal, again

RECAP | BOX SCORE

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -- After winning just once in its first 16 games at Stanford, Arizona has now won two in a row. The Wildcats could get used to that.

Elizabeth Pickney scored 18 points as Arizona earned a 68-65 upset of Stanford (No. 22 ESPN/USA Today, No. 21 AP) for its fifth straight victory.

"I was shocked we pulled it out," said Arizona forward Veranda James. "This win was great. Everybody was so emotional."

Reshea Bristol added 12 points for the Wildcats (2-0, 12-2), which defeated a nationally ranked team for the first time all season. Arizona's only two losses have come to top 10 teams.

"Any time you can beat Stanford at Stanford it's a big win," said Wildcats' coach Joan Bonvicini. "It's a boost to the confidence. We won on the road and we beat a good team."

Nicole Powell scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Stanford (1-1, 7-5), which lost for the first time at home this season.

"We didn't do a good job of getting it inside," said Powell. "They turned up the pressure with their press too."

Cori Enghusen had 12 points for the Cardinal, which was 0-for-3 from the foul line for the contest, a school record for futility.

Candice Allen added 11 points for Arizona, which won its fifth straight and 10 of 11.

The Wildcats did an effective job of disrupting the Stanford offense, which was missing its two top point guards, by utilizing a press and forcing turnovers. The Cardinal coughed up the ball 21 times while Arizona limited its turnovers to 11.

"That was one of the keys," said Bonvicini. "We had good possessions and got to the foul line."

The Cardinal maintained a slim lead -- they never held more than a six-point advantage -- through the middle of the second half when the Wildcats stormed ahead, 60-54, on the strength of a 10-0 run over a four-minute stretch with 5:59 remaining to play. Aimee Grzyb put the finishing touches on the rally with a short jumper.

Stanford rallied to tie the game at 65 when Powell tipped in a missed shot with 3:23 to go.

LaKeisha Taylor was 1-of-2 from the foul line to put Arizona up by a point with 2:18 to go, and after a Stanford missed free throw, Bristol tacked on two more foul shots for a 68-65 lead with 36 seconds remaining.

"We did get more pressure on them in the second half," said Bonvicini. "We created havoc and made them use time off the clock."

The Cardinal tried for the tying three-pointer in the final seconds, but three attempts fell short and the shot clock ran out.

"We just didn't get the job done in the post," said Enghusen.

Arizona played without junior guard Tysell Bozeman, who averages 10.3 points a game, as she sat our her second game due to a team suspension. James, who missed Thursday's game in Berkeley because of academic commitments, rejoined the team at Stanford.

The lead bounced back and forth seven times -- and the game tied on nine other occasions -- in the first half alone. Enghusen, who scored six of her points in the final four minutes of the first half, made a short jumper with one second left to allow Stanford a 36-35 halftime lead.
