Duke freshmen dominate in second half

RECAP | BOX SCORE

TALLAHASSE, Fla. (AP) -- Duke freshman Alana Beard was frustrated when she went to the locker room at halftime of the game Monday night against Florida State.

Beard, the Blue Devils' leading scorer this season, had scored only two points and missed six of seven shots. Making it worse, No. 5 Duke was tied with Florida State.

But Beard and freshman teammate Iciss Tillis came out in the second half and scored 36 of Duke's 44 points to lead the Blue Devils to a 73-60 victory.

Beard finished with 23 points and Tillis had 19. They also sparked an 8-0 run in the middle of the second half that put Duke ahead 48-39.

"They're great players," Florida State coach Sue Semrau said.

Tillis, a 6-foot-4 center, hit three 3-point shots in the second half and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds in the game.

"Iciss was hitting the 3s and really gave us a big boost," Duke coach Gail Goestenkors said.

Rochelle Parent added 12 points for Duke (14-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast). Brooke Wyckoff led Florida State (10-3, 2-1) with 16 points, while Levys Torres scored 15 and April Traylor added 13.

"I thought the difference in the game was Tillis stepping out and hitting those 3s," Semrau said.

The teams were tied 29 at halftime, after Florida State led for most of the first half. Duke used a 10-1 run late in the half to take a three-point lead before the Seminoles tied it.

Wyckoff led Florida State with 11 first-half points, while Torres and Traylor added five apiece. Georgia Schweitzer led Duke with nine first-half points, and Parent scored eight.
