Tech's 30-9 first-half run buries Baylor

RECAP | BOX SCORE

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Texas Tech's quickness and the turnovers it forced in the first half brought an end to Baylor's winning streak Wednesday night.

"You can't coach quickness," Baylor coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson said of her team's 84-61 loss to Texas Tech (No. 9 ESPN/USA Today, No. 11 AP). Baylor is unranked by the ESPN/USA Today, but No. 23 by the AP. "Either you have it or you don't. They've got some quickness out there on that basketball team. I thought that set the tempo for the game."

Jia Perkins scored a career high 23 points, leading the Raiders in their victory over previously unbeaten Baylor. It was the Raiders' 38th straight home victory and 38th consecutive victory over the Bears.

Texas Tech (12-2, 3-0 Big 12) used a 30-9 run to take a 48-22 lead at the half. Baylor (13-1, 2-1) shot only 29 percent during the first half, hitting 9-of-31 compared to Tech's 20-of-35.

Baylor couldn't recover from the Raiders' run, which began when the two teams were tied at 7-7 with 15:23 to play and lasted for more than 10 minutes.

Perkins hit a 3-pointer with 14:11 on the clock and Baylor's Jessika Stratton was about to take the ball across the midcourt line when she looked to the sideline for direction from Mulkey-Robertson.

Perkins moved toward Stratton, who lost control of the ball. Perkins picked up the ball and dribbled down the court, getting it to Amber Tarr, who unloaded a 3-pointer. The 3 put Tech ahead 17-9 and Baylor lost its momentum.

"I saw her talking to her coach," Perkins said. "I went over there and snuck up on her while they were talking. I was surprised when her coach didn't say anything to her."

From there, it was downhill for the Bears, who had 17 turnovers during the first half.

"We started the game too slow when we had to come out ready," forward Danielle Crockrom said. "They came out with the intensity and I don't think we had it at the start of the game."

During the second half, the Bears' shooting vastly improved and Tech's declined as Sheila Lambert scored 18 of her 25 points. Crockrom added 15.

"We didn't play as well the second half as we did the first," Tech coach Marsha Sharp said. "We didn't play with as much emotion. We played for 20 minutes and then we just kind of hung on for another 20."

Lambert entered the game with a Big 12-best scoring average of 24.5 points. Crockrom was second with a 21.5 average, and topped the conference's rebounders at 12.8.

In last season's regular season finale, Tech beat Baylor 105-52. The Bears haven't beaten Tech since a 62-56 win in the Southwest Conference tournament on March 11, 1983, and have lost their last 11 games in Lubbock by an average margin of 28 points.

The Raiders haven't lost at home since a 78-56 loss to Oklahoma State in 1997.
