Johnson's 12 FTs help Tide sink Tigers

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -- Shondra Johnson scored 12 points, all on free throws, to help Alabama beat Auburn (No. 23 ESPN/USA Today, No. 25 AP) 60-53 on Thursday night.

LaNisha Cartwell and Shun Hunter each added nine points for Alabama (13-3, 0-1 Southeastern Conference). Hunter had eight rebounds and Joni Crenshaw and Leigh Papisan each had seven rebounds for the Crimson Tide.

Lori Nero led Auburn (13-2, 1-1 SEC) with 19 points and 10 rebounds. LaRita Spencer had 11 points.

Auburn has lost consecutive SEC games and four of their last five games after opening the season 12-0.

The Tigers led 33-27 at halftime, but Alabama opened the second with a 16-2 run to take a 43-35.

Auburn fought back, though, taking a 51-50 lead with 3:55 remaining, after scoring 12 unanswered points.

But the Tide prevailed with four free throws and a late field goal. Auburn did not score a field goal in the final 3:07.
