Beavers built 28-point first-half lead

RECAP | BOX SCORE

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -- Even after losing their Pac-10 opener to Oregon last week, Oregon State Beavers knew Stanford (No. 25 ESPN/USA Today, No. 24 AP) was the real team to beat.

"Oregon's not the team you measure yourself against; Stanford is," Beavers coach Judy Spoelstra said after her team built a huge first-half lead and went on to upset the Cardinal 81-65 Thursday night.

Felicia Ragland scored 20 points for Oregon State, which had 15 steals and forced 30 turnovers, tying a Stanford record.

"We wanted to make sure that we put a lot of pressure on them in the backcourt," Spoelstra said. "As for the turnovers, that's uncharacteristic of a Stanford team."

Oregon State (9-3, 1-1 Pac-10) shot 62 percent in the first half and led by as many as 28 points. Stanford cut the lead to seven in the final minutes, but couldn't get closer.

Lauren St. Clair had 21 points to lead the Cardinal (7-6, 1-2), which has won or shared nine conference titles but has now lost two straight league games for the first time since 1993-94.

"I was really proud of our team, to stay with things. It could have been a lot worse," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. "We really got down early so quick and so far, it forces you to play perfect. I give our team a lot of credit for getting that close. Our team just got tired."

Stanford went on a 23-6 run to get back in the game. St. Clair scored 12 points of those points to help cut the lead to 65-58 with 3:43 left.

Ragland made a 3-pointer on Oregon State's next possession, and the Beavers put the game away on a sequence that began with Ragland getting fouled. She made the first free throw and missed the second, but teammate Ericka Cook grabbed the rebound, put it back and converted a three-point play to make it 72-58 with two minutes to go.

"It sends a message," Spoelstra said of the victory. "We can't take a step back."

Oregon State hosts Cal on Saturday afternoon, while the Cardinal is at No. 20 Oregon Saturday night.

Nicole Funn added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Beavers, who completed a five-game home stand. Cook had 16 points.

Nicole Powell added 16 points for the Cardinal. Former Oregon City High School star Lindsey Yamasaki scored 10 points.

St. Clair, who fouled out with 29 seconds left, made five of her seven 3-pointers, while her teammates were just 2-of-15.

The Beavers scored the first 11 points of the game, and Stanford's careless ball-handling helped them extend the lead to 39-11 with 6½ minutes left. Oregon State led 45-24 at the half.
