DES MOINES, Iowa -- Drake basketball players Mandy Kappel
and Martha Chaput have returned home to recover from their
illnesses.
Chaput, who's from Council Bluffs, was scheduled to start
chemotherapy on Wednesday in Omaha, Neb., for Hodgkin's disease.
The treatments will last six months.
Kappel was released from Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des
Moines last weekend after undergoing surgery to have a benign brain
tumor removed. She is now at home in Sioux Falls, S.D.
"Mandy's doing great. She's resting comfortably at home,"
coach Lisa Stone said. "She had a homecoming for Christmas, and
that's where she wanted to be."
The cards, letters and e-mails have warmed the team, Stone said.
Gov. Thomas Vilsack sent the Bulldogs a letter of support, while ESPN
commentator Dick Vitale sent an autographed T-shirt.
ESPN also taped a feature on the Bulldogs that tentatively will
air on Saturday.
