The Cowboys recovered Falcons QB Tony Graziani's fumble early in the third quarter. Four plays later, Emmitt Smith powered in for the touchdown that made it 17-0. Atlanta's anemic offense wasn't going to rally. Smith, who keyed the ball-control attack, rushing 29 times for 108 yards and two TDs -- and passed Tony Dorsett to become the NFL's fourth leading rusher all-time. Cowboys (2-0) bye.

Patriots K Adam Vinatieri booted a game-winning field goal for the second consecutive week, a 23-yarder with three seconds left. The kick, set up by a fumble by Colts rookie RB Edgerrin James, capped New England's rally from a 28-7 halftime deficit. Patriots QB Drew Bledsoe. Not shaken by his early struggles, Bledsoe led New England's comeback with three second-half TD passes. He finished 27-for-45 for 299 yards and four TDs. The Patriots' defense gets an honorable mention for its adjustments. Patriots (2-0) vs. Giants (1-1).

Chiefs RB Bam Morris scored on a 5-yard TD run, giving K.C. a 23-10 lead with 9:25 remaining. That capped a 66-yard, nine-play drive after Denver had scored its only TD of the day. Chiefs WR Derrick Alexander had 30 yards receiving during the march. Chiefs RB Kimble Anders. He gave coach Gunther Cunningham the ball-control offense he's been looking for, rumbling for a career-high 142 yards on 22 carries. Anders left late in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury, however. Chiefs (1-1) vs. Lions (2-0).

Vikings QB Randall Cunningham was sacked and threw two incompletions, quickly ending any hopes for a comeback. Raiders DT Russell Maryland. He recovered a fumble in the first quarter when the Vikings were threatening to make it 14-0. He also picked off a Cunningham pass and combined with Chuck Osborne for the game's final sack. Niners S Lance Schulters picked off Billy Joe Hobert's pass and returned it 64 yards, breaking a 21-21 tie with 1:31 left. The Saints turned the ball over on downs after reaching midfield on their final drive. Niners WR Terrell Owens. While many in San Francisco are starting to show their age, the young Owens made this victory possible. He caught two TD passes and finished with five catches for 49 yards. 49ers (1-1) at Cardinals (1-1).

Steelers rookie K Kris Brown made a 36-yard field goal as time expired, breaking a 20-20 tie. Pittsburgh's winning march was set up by Will Blackwell's 37-yard kickoff return. Brown. The kid from Nebraska was 3-for-3 on field-goal attempts, including the game-winner. His field goals came on three of Pittsburgh's final five drives. Steelers (2-0) vs. Seahawks (1-1).

The Panthers failed on a two-point conversion attempt when Lonnie Marts broke up Steve Beuerlein's pass to Wesley Walls. The Jaguars then fielded John Kasay's onside kick with 31 seconds remaining. Jaguars RB James Stewart. Filling in for the injured Fred Taylor, Stewart carried 27 times for 127 yards and two touchdowns. His 44-yard scamper in the game's final two minutes gave the Jags their final score. Jaguars (2-0) vs. Titans (2-0).

Down by 14, the Eagles wasted their good field position set up by Brian Dawkins' 37-yard interception return. Warren Sapp. Big 99 had a team-record 3½ sacks, leading a ferocious Bucs defense. Chargers LB Junior Seau, who knocked Blake out of the game and led a Chargers defense that held the Bengals to 172 yards of total offense, 47 on the ground. Seau also recovered a fumble.
