Garcia, 49ers thwart Chiefs

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Jeff Garcia broke his San Francisco scoring drought quickly and emphatically.

Steve Young's heir apparent, who had not been involved in a single scoring drive in two exhibition losses, threw for one touchdown and ran for another Sunday night as the 49ers scored on their first five possessions en route to a 33-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Garcia rushed twice for 12 yards, including a 2-yard TD, and was 7-of-8 for 82 yards and another 2-yard scoring play.

Fred Beasley
Fred Beasley scored San Francisco's first touchdown on Sunday with a 2-yard run.
"It's something the whole offensive unit wanted to try to work through and get over that hump," said Garcia, a second-year pro.

"The guys really wanted to come out fighting from the get-go and were able to put points on the board. It's a nice feeling to be able to go through the first quarter like that."

Rick Mirer replaced Garcia on San Francisco's third possession and teamed up with Jerry Rice on a 75-yard touchdown play as the 49ers got their first win in three exhibition games.

The first team defense of the Chiefs (0-2) looked terrible in the first quarter against Garcia and the rest of San Francisco's No. 1 offense.

The Chiefs trailed 30-0 at halftime and did not score until Warren Moon -- battling Todd Collins to be Elvis Grbac's backup -- found a wide open Larry Parker on a 25-yard scoring pass with 7:32 left in the third.

Mirer also had a good night, going 5-of-6 for 114 yards, including the big scoring play when Rice got behind rookie safety Greg Wesley, caught the ball at midfield and sailed untouched into the end zone.

"We didn't play on any phase of the game and we've just done a lousy job," Chiefs head coach Gunther Cunningham said. "I don't know if we're tired, we walked back in the heat or whatever we're doing but we're making mental errors and we're getting penalties.

"I'm disappointed in every phase of the game."

Garcia teamed with Fred Beasley on a 29-yard gain on a screen pass and gave the 49ers a 7-0 lead with a 2-yard run that capped a 7-play, 54-yard drive.

On their second possession, Garcia hit Terrell Owens for 22 yards and ran 10 yards on third-and-9 before capping the 80-yard march with a 2-yard scoring pass to Owens.

A few minutes later, John Milem recovered Donnell Bennett's unforced fumble and set up the 49ers on the Kansas City 35, leading to Wade Richey's 40-yard field goal and a 23-0 lead.

On the next possession for Kansas City, Moon's pass bounced off tight end Troy Drayton and into the arms of Winfred Tubbs, who returned it a yard to the 15. Mirer hit tight end Justin Swift for 14 yards, then Terry Jackson bulled his way across and put the 49ers up 30-0.

One encouraging note for the Chiefs was the debut of rookie Sylvester Morris. The first-round draft pick, who missed almost three weeks of training camp as a holdout, caught two passes from Moon for 15 yards.

Pete Stoyanovich hit a 25-yard field goal for Kansas City in the fourth and Richey had a 29-yarder with 2:25 to go..

The teams will meet in the regular season on Nov. 12 in San Francisco.

"We executed better in this game," San Francisco coach Steve Mariucci said. "We converted some third downs and hit a big screen early."

Mariucci said Garcia appeared to be more confident than he had been earlier.

"It was a good couple of drives for him. It was nice to see -- one touchdown run and one touchdown throw," Mariucci said. "He did some good things out of the shotgun. He executed like we've seen him execute before."
