OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Kicker Sebastian Janikowski could hear
the crowd buzzing when the Raiders got in range for a 69-yard field
goal in the first half against the Detroit Lions.
But Raiders coach Jon Gruden wasn't about to order up an attempt
Friday night, even though the Lions were leading 14-13.
"Not in this lifetime," Gruden joked.

Lions lose Tomczak

Detroit Lions backup quarterback Mike
Tomczak broke the tibia in his right leg in Friday night's
preseason game against the Oakland Raiders.
Tomczak was starting in place of Charlie Batch, who is
recovering from a broken bone in his right knee.
Tomczak was 6-for-12 for 37 yards before he was knocked down by
Oakland linebacker Greg Biekert and stayed on the ground, curled up
in pain and grasping at his right shin. He was replaced by Stoney Case.
"He's going to be put on injured reserve, there's no choice
there," Lions coach Bobby Ross said. "We're going to have to go
get someone else, probably a guy with experience."

Janikowski, Oakland's first-round draft pick out of Florida
State, did make three considerably shorter field goals as the
Raiders defeated the Lions 23-17.
Boasting he can make a 65-yarder, Janikowski would have been
game for the longer kick.
"I was ready," he said. "I was pretty sure coach wouldn't
call it, though. It was too long."
James Stewart, who badly bruised his groin during Detroit's game
last weekend against Buffalo, ran for a touchdown and caught
another. He had nine carries for 32 yards, and caught three passes
for 39 yards.
Randy Jordan's 1-yard touchdown run with 5:24 to go in the first
quarter put the Raiders up 7-0.
Janikowski, known for his brushes with the law in Florida, was
the first kicker drafted in the first round since 1979. He made it
10-0 with a 38-yard field goal, early in the second quarter, then
added a 39-yarder less than five minutes later.
Making his Oakland debut, Janikowski wasn't worried about his
acceptance by the hometown fans.
"I didn't feel any pressure. I was excited about it," he said.
"They pumped me up."
Mike Tomczak, who started at quarterback for the Lions, broke
his right tibia during the game.
Tomczak's replacement in the game, Stoney Case, continued the
drive, throwing a 32-yard touchdown pass to Stewart that narrowed
the score to 13-7.
Stewart added a 12-yard touchdown run to give the Lions a 14-13
lead going into halftime.
Janikowski added a 41-yard field goal midway through the third
quarter to give the Raiders a 16-14 lead. Raiders backup
quarterback Bobby Hoying had a 4-yard scoring run with 3:20 left in
the quarter.
Jason Hanson kicked a 46-yard field goal for the Lions with 2:46
left in the game.
Rodney Peete made his preseason debut for the Raiders, taking
over for starter Rich Gannon in the second quarter, but was sacked
by linebacker Stephen Boyd on his first series and was unable to
move the ball down field.
Peete, third on the Raiders' depth chart behind Gannon and
Hoying, finished 4-of-7 for 30 yards.
Gannon, who was 6-of-9 for 32 yards, stayed in the game as
Janikowski's holder.
Janikowski was acquitted this summer of charges that he tried to
bribe a Florida police officer. In June, he was charged with
possession of the designer drug GHB, sometimes called the date-rape
drug.
But the Raiders decided he was worth the risk. They signed him
to a five-year, $6 million contract, including a $2 million signing
bonus.
Herman Moore, making his first preseason appearance this season
for the Lions, caught two passes for 22 yards.
Raiders tight end Rickey Dudley, who had back surgery in the
offseason, also played in his first game of the preseason. He had
four catches for 22 yards.
The Raiders opened the game with a moment of silence for Eric
Turner, the Oakland safety who died in the offseason of abdominal
cancer.
