KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Jacksonville may have found a running
back. The questions remain whether the Jaguars can find an
offensive line that'll give him room to run and quarterback Mark
Brunell time to pass.
Shyrone Stith, a rookie taken in the seventh-round out of
Virginia Tech, carried nine times for 103 yards, including a
78-yard TD run that catapulted the Jaguars to a 26-22 preseason
victory Saturday night over the winless Kansas City Chiefs.
But the Jaguars' injury-weakened line allowed three quarterbacks
to get sacked a total of seven times.
"Obviously we had some problems with protection," coach Tom
Coughlin said. "We got some people run over. We have to continue
to work and lock up those holes in the offensive line."
Mike Hollis kicked four field goals for the Jaguars (3-0).
"You have to adjust to injuries," said Zach Wiegert,
Jacksonville's right tackle. "Injuries are part of the game. A lot
of guys get hurt and you just have to deal with it and overcome it."
The Chiefs' offense has scored only two touchdowns the past two
weeks.
"We're battling to get ready for (the regular-season opener)
Sept. 3," coach Gunther Cunningham said of the 0-3 Chiefs. "You
have to look for areas of improvement and you have to make a
statement at the beginning of the week of what you want to
accomplish in the game, and I feel for the most part we
accomplished those things."
Stith, with 3:50 left, squirmed through a hole on the right side
and outran cornerback Eric Warfield on a 78-yard TD run for a 26-16
lead.
Backup quarterback Todd Collins immediately marched the Chiefs
downfield and hit Kirby Dar Dar for a 6-yard scoring pass. The
2-point conversion failed, leaving the Jaguars up by 4 with 2:51
left.
A 17-yard punt by Jacksonville's Steve Lindsey gave the Chiefs
the ball on their own 49 with 2:15 to play, but linebacker Danny
Clark sacked Collins on third and fourth down.
Bracy Walker sped 20 yards into the end zone with Jamie Martin's
fumble following Kansas City's sixth sack, giving the Chiefs a
16-13 lead with 13:04 left.
Defensive end Duane Clemons, signed as a free agent to help
supply the pass-rushing void left by the death of Derrick Thomas,
had two sacks in the first half. Defensive tackle John Browning
also had two sacks for the Chiefs.
"This is definitely one of the most talented groups I've ever
been on," said Clemons, who had nine sacks last year for
Minnesota. "When you look at all the veteran guys with Dishman,
(James) Hasty, Donnie Edwards and Lew Bush, the defense is like a
who's who of the best guys from around the league."
The Jaguars were leading 13-9 when Walker broke through against
Jacksonville's second-team line, knocked the ball out of Martin's
hands and picked it up and went 20 yards.
Martin hit R. Jay Soward for gains of 29 and 34 yards on the
next possession and Hollis tied it 16-all with a 32-yarder. One
play earlier, he was wide left from 37 yards but was given a second
chance five yards closer when the Chiefs were called for offsides.
Following a Chiefs' turnover, Hollis connected on a 27-yarder
for a 19-16 lead with 6:15 left.
The first half was a battle of first-team quarterbacks and
expected regular-season starters. Brunell hit 9-of-14 for 115 yards
and one touchdown and got sacked twice. Brunell also led the
Jaguars on a 46-yard march at the end of the half to set up a
46-yard Hollis field goal.
Elvis Grbac was 10-for-17 for 83 yards but managed only two
field-goal drives.
The Jaguars scored the only touchdown of the first half when
Jimmy Smith got behind cornerback Cris Dishman and hauled in
Brunell's 32-yard scoring play on third and 10.
The Chiefs made it 7-6 on a 39-yard goal by Pete Stoyanovich
with 38 seconds left. But the Jaguars got the ball on their own 30
and went 42 yards in five plays to set up Hollis' 46-yard field
goal for a 10-6 halftime lead.
Stoyanovich also connected from 28 yards on the Chiefs' first possession.
