SEATTLE (AP) -- Brock Huard is going to make Mike Holmgren's
decision easy.
Huard passed seven yards to rookie James Williams for a
touchdown with 33 seconds left to give the Seattle Seahawks a 25-21
victory Saturday night over the San Francisco 49ers.
The Seahawks (2-1) came back to beat the 49ers (1-3) with the
only touchdown of the second half.
Huard, a second-year quarterback who is battling to become the
backup to Jon Kitna, drove the Seahawks 59 yards in seven plays in
70 seconds. A leaping Williams caught the ball in the end zone
against cornerback Anthony Parker.
Glenn Foley, the Seahawks' No. 2 quarterback last season, threw
six interceptions in a loss at Arizona last Saturday night.
Because of a long, sustained drive by the 49ers in the third
quarter that stretched into the fourth period, Huard didn't get as
much playing time as Holmgren, Seattle's second-year coach, wanted
him to get.
"I would liked to have Brock had more snaps tonight," Holmgren
said.
Of Williams, a sixth-round draft choice from Marshall, he added,
"He's a talented young man. He made a nice catch."
"This was a much better way to end the game," said Huard, who
missed on a two-point conversion pass in an exhibition loss to the
49ers last season.
It was a disappointing defeat for the 49ers, who carried a 21-18
halftime lead into the final minute of the game.
Jeff Garcia and Rick Mirer each passed for a touchdown for the
49ers, who intercepted Kitna twice.
Joey Eloms intercepted a pass by rookie Gio Carmazzi and
returned it 43 yards to the San Francisco 11 to end the 49ers' last
threat with three seconds to go.
The 49ers got an interception of a Kitna pass attempt by safety
Lance Schulters at the San Francisco 1-yard line and then won an
instant replay reversal of what would have been a go-ahead
touchdown by the Seahawks in the third quarter.
Kitna drove the Seahawks from their own 24 to a first down at
the San Francisco 10 on their first possession of the second half.
But Kitna was intercepted by Schulters while attempting a pass to
Derrick Mayes.
On the 49ers' drive from the 1, Travis Jervey fumbled the ball
when he was hit by Anthony Simmons on a third-and-5 carry from the
San Francisco 42. Reggie Tongue picked up the ball and ran it back
48 yards for an apparent touchdown, but 49ers coach Steve Mariucci
challenged the play. Referee Mike Carey ruled that Jervey was down
before the fumble, allowing the 49ers to keep possession of the
ball.
Mariucci said he kept pressing the button on his instant-replay
beeper, but he didn't get instant attention from the officials so
he ran down the sideline demanding their attention.
"It didn't work so I started yelling," Mariucci said. "If
they get up there and line up fast (for the extra point), we can't
challenge it and that's what they were doing."
The Seahawks appeared to have all the momentum at halftime.
Kitna was 7-for-7 for 74 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown
pass to Sean Dawkins, and then passed to Derrick Mayes for a
2-point conversion to cut San Francisco's lead to 21-18 with 1:04
left in the first half. Kitna had a 37-yard completion to Dawkins
nullified when Dawkins was called for pass interference.
Former Seahawks quarterback Mirer replaced Garcia in the second
quarter and led the 49ers 80 yards in nine plays for a touchdown,
teaming with Jerry Rice on a 34-yard touchdown pass to give San
Francisco a 21-10 lead. Mirer is playing with his fourth team in
four years since the Seahawks traded him to Green Bay.
Garcia played four series and led the 49ers to two touchdowns.
He was 6-for-7 for 59 yards and one TD.
On the game's first play, Kitna was intercepted by linebacker
Jeff Ulbrich, giving the 49ers the ball on the Seattle 20. The
49ers scored six plays later on a 4-yard pass from Garcia to J.J.
Stokes.
The Seahawks came back in the opening quarter to tie it on a
4-yard TD pass from Kitna to Derrick Mayes and then went ahead 10-7
on a 22-yard field goal by Todd Peterson.
Garcia directed the 49ers to a touchdown early in the second
quarter with Terry Jackson scoring on a fourth-and-1.
Mirer was 8-for-14 for 115 yards and one touchdown with one
interception. Kitna was 20-for-29 for 233 yards and two touchdowns
with two interceptions.
