Friday, February 15 Weis awaiting Bucs call By Mark Cannizzaro Special to ESPN.com |

Charlie Weis' name remains at or near the surface of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' search for a head coach. Weis, the New England Patriots' offensive coordinator just signed to a two-year contract worth about $1 million, would love to become an NFL head coach. However, a source close to Weis says the Patriots' top offensive assistant has heard nothing from the Glazer family, despite a published report and the rampant speculation the Glazer family is poised to call Weis. A report Thursday indicated Weis should be expecting a call from the Buccaneers any day now about the job. According to the source close to Weis, he's heard no indication of that himself and he's moving on with plans for the Patriots' offseason in New England. Though Weis was just signed to the new two-year deal, if Tampa Bay did want his services as their head coach he'd be free to leave. According to Weis' close friend, Weis was contacted by Tampa Bay general manager Rich McKay shortly after the Patriots' Super Bowl victory, but McKay was offering Weis the Bucs' offensive coordinator job, thinking at the time that either Jon Gruden or Marvin Lewis was going to be coach. At that time, last week, Weis had standing offers from New England to stay and from Carolina's new head coach John Fox to join the Panthers as their offensive coordinator. He told both parties that he'd let them know his decision by noon Wednesday, Feb. 6. Because he was in limbo regarding the head coaching search, McKay said he couldn't officially offer Weis the job until Thursday, meaning if Weis turned down the Patriots and Panthers he'd be unemployed for a day with no guarantees from Tampa Bay. So, according to Weis' friend, Weis told McKay last Wednesday in the last conversation the two have had, that he was going to re-sign with New England but to "feel free" to call him if the head coaching job doesn't get filled and they were interested in him for it. That was the last contact Tampa Bay made with Weis, the source said. Meanwhile, McKay, who was given permission to speak to the Atlanta Falcons about their general manager job, looks like he might be heading out the door depending on whether or not the Bucs try to bilk a large compensation package from the Falcons.
