Hochuli says lockout could last even longer

The Seattle Seahawks' secondary woes continued Saturday when Ike Charlton became the third cornerback in three weeks to suffer an injury that will keep him out of the next week's opener against the Browns.

Charlton will undergo an MRI for a knee injury suffered during Saturday's 280-14 victory over the New Orleans Saints. Starter Shawn Springs has a torn hamstring injury that will sideline him at least two or three weeks into the regular season. Veteran Willie Williams fractured a forearm and may miss the first month.

Those two injuries left coach Mike Holmgren with only his past two second-round choices, Charlton, who was selected in 2000, and Ken Lucas, who was drafted this year.

"We'll know more Sunday, but it's his knee, and to speculate further than that would be unfair, but he might have a little something fixed in there," Holmgren said.

For weeks, the Seahawks have been looking for veteran help. James Hasty lives in Seattle but he is asking for a guaranteed contract to make a visit to the team facility across a bridge from downtown. Former Bears defensive back Thomas Smith is another possibility but he is being pursued by eight teams.

"The teams that we are talking to are trying to free up cap room," said Smith's agent, Brantley Evans. "We're in the process of cutting down the list and deciding which teams."

Another possibility is Tyronne Drakeford, who was with the Redskins last season.

"It's unfortunate, and it's unusual to get hit at one position like that, but we'll go to work on trying to do something for a couple of weeks anyway," Holmgren said. "We get Shawn Springs back by Game 2 or Game 3. That's my hope. Let's wait on Ike. I don't know what the time period is on that. Certainly, we have to try to do something here temporarily."
