SAN DIEGO -- A day after leaving practice early Thursday because of a pop in his surgically repaired throwing shoulder, quarterback Ryan Leaf returned to practice Friday and is expected to play Saturday against the Vikings.
Wide receiver Curtis Conway, who re-aggravating a strained hamstring at the same practice, will miss the preseason game.
Both players left practice with injuries within a matter of
minutes of each other. Leaf felt a pop in his surgically repaired
throwing shoulder. Both players underwent MRIs after practice.
Riley said Leaf told him the feeling in the shoulder was
different than the periodic pain Leaf has dealt with during
training camp.
Leaf missed all last season with a torn labrum in the shoulder. He underwent a second operation after the season when pain persisted, and the Chargers are watching his recovery closely.
His first competitive NFL game in 19 months was last Saturday
against the San Francisco 49ers. Leaf was 7-of-12 passing for 103
yards and one touchdown. He also threw an interception and lost two
fumbles.
The injury to Conway came when the eight-year veteran lunged to make a catch on a streak pattern. He immediately went down and lay prone for nearly five minutes before walking off the field.
Conway, who was lured to the Chargers this offseason with a $14
million deal, has spent more time on the sidelines during training camp than on the field. It was unknown when he will return to action.
