DAVIE, Fla. -- Two weeks after arthroscopic hip surgery,
Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Fiedler returned to practice Saturday, rejoining the race to succeed Dan Marino.

Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt is giving Fiedler, who had a hip
tear repaired Aug. 3, every opportunity to compete with Damon
Huard. Huard will start Monday night against Green Bay.
Barring any setbacks, Wannstedt said Fiedler will get his first
preseason action in the Dolphins' last exhibition game at New
Orleans on Aug. 25.
"I think (Sunday) we'll have a real good indication,"
Wannstedt said. "If he comes in tomorrow and feels good, then I
think we'll have cleared a hurdle."
The Dolphins are worried Fiedler will be sore after practicing
for the first time in weeks. Because of his hip problem, the
Dolphins want to see how effectively Fiedler can twist, turn and
move around on the field.
Fiedler took snaps running the scout team, which simulates the
opposing offense. He threw about 35 passes without any discomfort.
"I felt great out there," said Fiedler, a free-agent pickup
from Jacksonville. "It was good to get back into the swing of
things, back in the flow."
Fiedler tossed some passes around on Friday. He said his muscles
were a bit tight Saturday, but they loosened up. "I should be ready to go pretty soon," he said.
It was assumed Fiedler would miss all four preseason games after
the surgery.
"Thank modern technology," Fiedler said. "It's not a shock.
I've been feeling pretty good since surgery. I have a chance to
come back for that last preseason game. Everything has gone
according to schedule. There hasn't been any setbacks."
