Strahan passes Taylor, nears Gastineau mark

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA -- New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan broke Lawrence Taylor's team record for sacks in a season against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Strahan's 3½ sacks in the first half against the Eagles gave him 21½ on the year -- a half-sack away from Mark Gastineau's NFL record.

Taylor, a Hall of Fame linebacker, had 20½ sacks in 1986, when he was NFL MVP and led the Giants to their first Super Bowl championship. Gastineau had 22 for the New York Jets in 1984.

Eagles defensive end Reggie White had 21 sacks in 12 games during the strike-shortened 1987 season.
