Report: Armstead likely will be cap victim

ESPN.com news services

The New York Giants intend to release five-time Pro Bowl linebacker Jessie Armstead next week, Newsday reported on Saturday.

The Giants, who waived running back Joe Montgomery on Friday, are trying to get under the salary cap of $71.1 million. Offensive tackle Lomas Brown, safety Sam Garnes, quarterback Jason Garrett and tight end Howard Cross could also be cap victims -- but could return at a lower price, according to the newspaper report.

Armstead, 31, has played his entire career with the Giants. He has 30.5 career sacks in his nine-year careeer, but just 1.5 sacks and 88 total tackles last season. The Giants are looking to give young players such as Dhani Jones more of a look.

Armstead has started 96 consecutive games and has never missed a game in his NFL career.

Defensive end Michael Strahan, who broke the single-season sack record in 2001, and starting quarterback Kerry Collins will not likely have their contracts redone by Friday -- when the free agency period begins -- Newsday reports.
