Raiders taking their time with hiring decision

ESPN.com news services

The Oakland Raiders are expected to hire offensive coordinator Bill Callahan as their next head coach, ESPN.com's John Clayton reported Sunday.

Raiders boss Al Davis doesn't appear to be in a hurry to promote Callahan since the team has its practice schedules planned through training camp, its free-agency plan in place and every assistant under contract, Clayton reported.

Davis, the Raiders' managing general partner, is expected to continue his quest for Jon Gruden's replacement in the next couple days.

Meanwhile, the Contra Costa Times reported that Gruden and two league sources say signs point to the Raiders promoting Callahan.

Several Raiders officials and Callahan's agent, Gary O'Hagan, refused to confirm that Callahan's hiring is imminent. O'Hagan told the newspaper on Friday that Callahan meets with Davis and senior assistant Bruce Allen on a regular basis but not necessarily about Oakland's coaching vacancy.

A source close to Callahan on Friday said Callahan's family still hadn't heard anything pertaining to him being interviewed or offered the job. Several phone messages to Callahan did not get returned.

"We'll continue the process on the head coach while were in Indianapolis," Allen told the Contra Costa Times on Wednesday, "but I wouldn't expect a decision to be made there. As we said, there is really no deadline, other than picking the right person."

A published report said the Raiders intend to interview Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders, Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Brad Childress and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver coach Nolan Cromwell.
