Williams finishes with six carries

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ricky Williams was back on the field Saturday for the New Orleans Saints' 34-16 playoff loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Ricky Williams of the Saints gained 14 yards on six carries during Saturday's loss.
Williams took a handoff and ran for 3 yards up the middle less than five minutes into the game, marking the first time he'd played since breaking a bone in his left ankle Nov. 12. He finished the game with 14 yards on six carries. Williams also had one reception for 2 yards.

"I felt pretty good," Williams said. "I was excited to get back out there."

Asked if he was upset with his limited role on Saturday, Williams repled: "No, not at all. I understood the game plan. I knew what we were trying to do."

Williams, who had 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns on 248 carries when he went out, was by far the Saints' leading rusher. He is still No. 2 on the team in receptions with 44 for 409 yards and a touchdown.

The injury occurred 7½ weeks ago against Carolina. At the time, predictions were Williams would miss 6-to-8 weeks.

Williams ran a few plays with the scout team last week but complained of tendinitis and pain in the ankle. Early this week, he practiced sparingly.

"I had a little bit of pain, but nothing I didn't expect," Williams said.

The Saints have been inconsistent running the ball since Williams went out. Former Vikings running back Terry Allen became the main rusher with 46 carries for 179 yards and two touchdowns.
