Only game can keep Lynch away By Greg Garber ESPN.com SAN DIEGO -- Five years ago, Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety John Lynch founded a charity golf tournament with his brother-in-law, John Allred, the Pittsburgh Steelers tight end.
On Monday, Allred was looking for his co-host on the lush grounds of the Fairbanks Ranch Country Club. "Man, I have no idea where my co-host is," Allred said as he walked toward the 10th tee of the shotgun tournament. "To tell you the truth, I think he's big-timing us. Guy makes the Pro Bowl and, suddenly, he's too good for us." In fact, Lynch was in the air, flying in with the Buccaneers from Tampa. He has a little engagement Sunday -- Super Bowl XXXVII. This will be a week of weeks for Lynch, who played football and baseball at local Torrey Pines High School and went on to Stanford. "To get to my first Super Bowl is sweet," he said after the Bucs' 27-10 victory over the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. "To do it in my hometown, I think that's second to none. "I'm sure the ticket requests are going to be crazy, but I'm not too worried." The tournament featured, among others, Eric Dickerson, Chester McGlockton, Brad Daluiso, Kyle Turley, Mrs. Phil Mickelson and Mrs. John Lynch. "You think you know somebody," said Daluiso, who is a pretty fair golfer. "The guy sets it all up and then he doesn't show. That's just selfish." Greg Garber is a senior writer for ESPN.com. |
