Anderson takes lead in halfback race

GREELEY, Colo. -- Here are five quick observations from the Broncos' training camp.

Camp Classic Moment
Former Broncos linebacker Randy Gradishar loved to make sure young players were properly showered. He would scheme with one front office person and a friend on the team in the old days at Greeley to dump a trash can full of water on rookies or other people. As legend had it, Gradishar conspired to get a young John Elway when he had the perfect hair. These were back in the days when players motored around campus on scooters. Elway put himself in proper position a couple floors under Gradishar to be soaked with the trash can of water. Being a young Elway, he was tough. He underwent such media scrutiny that battling newspapers tried to out-report each other on which vegetables he had with his entrée. The Gradishar shower, though, made Elway feel part of the team.

1. From what I see, Mike Anderson has the lead in the starting halfback competition. He runs through holes with great authority and pops through them in a no-nonsense style. He's 10 pounds lighter and looks quicker. The Denver Post is touting Olandis Gary, who is more talented than Anderson. With Terrell Davis nagged by knee problems, either Gary or Anderson will get the opening day start.

2. Speedy wide receiver Kevin Kasper might have a chance to make it as the team's four or fifth receiver. Eddie Kennison looks good. Keith Poole is struggling with hamstring problems. Chris Cole, last year's draft choice, is making his run. Kasper has good hands and is also a possible backup returner.

3. To me, Gus Frerotte is throwing the ball extremely well. Recovering from elbow surgery, Steve Beuerlein is only going to play in the final two pre-season games. If that isn't enough time to get him ready for the backup job, coach Mike Shanahan faces a though decision as to whether or not to cut or trade Frerotte or keep around three quarterbacks. Looks like they will keep Frerotte.

4. All is well on the Chester McGlockton watch. He appears to be having fun, something that can't be said of some of his years with the Raiders or Chiefs. The Broncos think is that McGlockton can still dominate the interior of an offensive line while Trevor Pryce can aggressively attack and get into the backfield

5. So far Deltha O'Neal is holding up pretty well as the starting cornerback. He has great speed and seems natural falling back into coverage. That said, his test will be the four exhibition games. If he doesn't get beat, he will be the starter. If he does, the Broncos have a number of other options including veteran Eric Davis.
