Chargers' offensive line taking shape

By John Clayton

CARSON, Calif. -- Observations on the 2003 San Diego Chargers from training camp practices:

1. The offensive line is much more solid with the additions of two former Cowboys -- Kelvin Garmon and Solomon Page. Garmon is grading out as the team's best blocker after coming over from Dallas in a trade last October. Page was a late free agent signing but is locking down the right guard position. Offensive line coach Hudson Houck is one of the best in the game, and getting two of his former Cowboys should help.

2. Marcellus Wiley looks so much better now that he's recovered from serious groin problems, but it's defensive end Raylee Johnson who is wowing coaching in practices. The 33-year-old defensive end always comes to camp in great shape, but he's worked extra hard this offseason and it shows. The Chargers need a 10-sack season from him, something he hasn't done since 1999.

3. It's Reche Caldwell's time to step up and be the starter on the other side of David Boston. Caldwell caught just 22 passes as a rookie, but if he shows starting skills, Tim Dwight can be more effective as the slot receiver and can be used for a few special teams plays.

4. Marty Schottenheimer must find a way to start second-round choice Drayton Florence. He's the star of camp. Tay Cody is in front of him for now, but that will change if Florence does well in the preseason games. The Chargers are hoping that strong safety Terrence Kiel, who is recovering from a gunshot wound and a broken leg, can get into the third and fourth preseason game and battle for playing time.
