Modano gets winner over Oilers

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- Even big goal scorers like Mike Modano are surprised at times when the puck goes in the net.

Modano scored with 1:23 left to give the Dallas Stars a 3-2 victory Tuesday night over the Edmonton Oilers.

Modano shoveled the puck in from close range after Mike Keane's dump-in deflected off Oilers defenseman Jason Smith to the Dallas forward.

"It looked pretty innocent," Modano said. "It ended up as a shock.

"Mike laid it in soft. Smith lost it for a second."

Keane dumped the puck in from the blue line and Smith had difficulty in front of goalie Tommy Salo.

"I've got to do a little better job on the puck," Smith said. "I've got to handle it or take him out of the play. I went back for the puck. I tried to scoop it up and it bounced over my stick."

The goal was Modano's 16th of the season. He has 19 goals and 49 points in 35 career games against the Oilers.

Aaron Gavey and Kirk Muller also scored for Dallas.

Smith and Ethan Moreau scored for the Oilers, whose eight-game home-undefeated streak (5-0-3) came to an end.

Edmonton coach Kevin Lowe was miffed at what he thought was a missed offsides call that led to the decisive goal.

"OK, hands in the air," said Lowe, as he addressed the media. "Who thought it was offside? I think if it was us going the other way it would have been offside. It was missed."

Lowe said he reviewed the tape and came to the conclusion that linesmen Swede Knox and Randy Mitton erred.

"I've got to be careful," Lowe said. "Not from a league perspective, but we see those guys all the time."

Edmonton outshot Dallas 39-16, including 30-11 over the final 40 minutes.

"He was pretty solid," Modano said of Dallas goalie Ed Belfour. "He's been our best player all season. Eventually we chip away and score one or two."

Smith opened the scoring on a wrist shot from just inside the blue line at 12:53 of the first period. His screened shot beat Belfour high on the stick side.

Edmonton made it 2-0 at 14:15 of the first when Moreau took an excellent passout from Todd Marchant and beat Belfour with a quick shot.

Gavey cut the lead to 2-1 at 17:42 of the first when he was given time to set up in the slot and beat Salo with a wrist shot. It was Gavey's first goal of the season.

Muller tied the game on a wraparound at 9:27 of the second when the Oilers had difficulty with the puck behind their net.

"We didn't finish the job," Lowe said. "We didn't play that well when we got up 2-0. We've got to go for the jugular."
