EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- Steve Yzerman reached another milestone and then fell just short of giving his team a victory.

Yzerman tied Mario Lemieux for seventh place on the NHL's career goal list with his 613rd, but was denied another goal at the buzzer as the Detroit Red Wings tied the Edmonton Oilers 3-3 Sunday night.

The Detroit center skated in on a short-handed breakaway, as the final seconds ran off in overtime, only to have his shot stopped by Tommy Salo as the game ended.

"I thought I had enough time," Yzerman said. "I really didn't get a good shot."

The Red Wings, winless in their past three (0-2-1) games, have allowed 29 goals during a 2-4-2 skid. The one point, however, moved Detroit back into a tie with St. Louis for first place in the Central Division.

"We have to get better at shutting teams down when we have the lead," Yzerman said after Detroit squandered a two-goal lead.

He played down the importance of tying Lemieux.

"I'm just playing," Yzerman said. "I don't really think about it a lot. I don't get too caught up in it in the middle of the season."

Mathieu Dandenault and Vyacheslav Kozlov also scored for Detroit.

Ethan Moreau had two goals and Jim Dowd had one for the Oilers, who played to their 12th tie of the season.

The Oilers rebounded after being outshot 18-9 in the first period. Edmonton outshot Detroit 23-16 over the final 45 minutes.

Edmonton is also winless in three contests (0-2-1).

"Obviously you don't want to get down 2-0 the way we've been playing lately," Moreau said. "We came unglued a little bit in the first period. They have one of the best power plays in the league. We were a little undisciplined."

Scotty Bowman coached his 500th game for the Red Wings and has compiled a 289-147-64 with Detroit.

Dowd knocked in a rebound from beside the net on a power play at 9:48 of the third to tie it 3-3.

Kozlov gave Detroit a 3-2 advantage, making a perfect deflection from the slot on Nicklas Lidstrom's shot on a power play at 9:02 of the second.

Yzerman's first-period power-play goal at 8:46 put Detroit in front 1-0. Yzerman, who has 42 goals and 74 points in 50 games against the Oilers, was hit in the chest by Steve Duchesne's point shot and quickly put the puck past Salo.

Dandenault made it 2-0 less than three minutes later. His slap shot from the point beat Salo at 11:30.

Mike Grier's shot from the right boards deflected off Moreau and past Chris Osgood at 15:33 to make it 2-1.

Moreau tied it in the second by knocking in a rebound of Christian Laflamme's point shot at 8:02.
