EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Patrick Elias hopes he's just getting started.

Elias extended his scoring streak to a New Jersey-record 13 games, scoring twice and adding an assist in the Devils' 4-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Friday night.

New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur was in top form Friday, making 31 saves for his 39th career shutout.
"Obviously this feels good, but I want to get better every game," he said. "You want to work on yourself every game, every practice."

Elias broke the record of 12 games set by Aaron Broten in 1984-85 and matched by Pat Verbeek in 1987-88 and Scott Stevens in 1993-94. The Czech star has 14 goals and eight assists during the streak, and 19 goals in his last 20 games.

"Hopefully, I can keep this going," he said. "Our whole line, we are having fun out there and we can win some games as a team. We want to make the other team aware of us every shift so that they feel we can score every shift against them."

The Devils have won four straight to improve to 11-1-2 in their last 14.

Martin Brodeur made 31 saves for his NHL-high 29th victory. He has three shutouts this season and 39 in his career.

"We played a solid game and came up with some big goals," said Brodeur, who recorded his first complete-game shutout of the Islanders. He shared a shutout with Mike Dunham in 1996-97.

"I thought about it as it got closer and closer," he said. "That was a team that I had never had a real one against.

Petr Sykora added a goal and had the primary assist on both of Elias' goals. Sergei Brylin also scored for New Jersey.

New York lost its sixth straight, and is 1-11-1 in its last 13 games. The Islanders, aided by seven power plays, kept pace with Devils in shots, with New Jersey finishing with a 33-31 advantage.

"We give them a lot of credit," Islanders goalie Kevin Weekes said. "They're obviously a very efficient hockey team ... like a machine. They seem to be playing so well and so synchronized in all aspects of their game."

Elias got the lone goal of the first period at 1:20, slipping behind Islanders defenseman Jamie Heward to slam a centering feed from Sykora past Weekes.

Midway through the second, Brylin patiently held the puck and waited for an opening that developed when Islanders defenseman Jamie Rivers checked Jay Pandolfo into Weekes.

Elias, once again set up Sykora, made it 3-0 with a power-play goal with 3:11 left in the second. Elias turned playmaker in the third, setting up Sykora at 9:41.
