VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- It took the Edmonton Oilers a league-high 21 tries but thanks to Ethan Moreau they finally won a game in overtime this season. Moreau's goal with a minute left in the extra period, lifted the Oilers to a 5-4 come-from-behind win over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night.
Tom Poti, skating up the left boards, centered a pass to Moreau who fired a shot between Vancouver goaltender Garth Snow's legs. The Oilers ended a 20-game winless string in overtime games, improving to 1-7-13. Meanwhile, the Canucks' overall struggles continue as they are now winless in their last six games (0-4-2) and are 0-6-2 at home since beating Washington on Dec. 22. "I'm just trying to go to the net and redirect the puck. You don't think there. You're either shooting on the ice or shooting high. It's just a reaction thing," said Moreau, who has 11 goals on the season. With the red light on, the Oilers mobbed Moreau as if he had scored a playoff winner. "It was great. It's only two points but it felt like a playoff series or something," Moreau said. "It's a good feeling. We haven't been able to celebrate yet like that this year." Oilers captain Doug Weight felt sheepish after the on-ice celebration. He said the Oilers were not attempting to show up the Canucks. "We needed to let off some steam after that goal, so we beat each other up out there in the corner," said Weight, who had a goal and an assist. "No disrespect ... I think everybody in the league understands what we've been going through. "This is a sweet victory for us." The wild finish ended a wild game as the Oilers won it in dramatic fashion. Trailing 4-3 after the first period, the Oilers forced overtime when Pat Falloon scored with 1:20 left in the third period. Weight set up the goal when he carried the puck deep into the Vancouver end and fed a behind-the-back pass to Falloon, who one-timed it in from 10 feet out. Roman Hamrlik had a goal and three assists while Jim Dowd also scored for the Oilers, who took over sole possession of eighth place in the Western Conference standings, two points ahead of the idle Los Angeles Kings. Markus Naslund had a goal and an assist, while Adrian Aucoin, Darby Hendrickson and Matt Cooke also scored for the Canucks. "The first period was definitely a roller-coaster ride," said Snow, who faced 23 shots in the Vancouver net. "We really wanted the two points but we fell short. "We showed a lot of character in the first 20 minutes to come back. It was really emotional." The four-goal first period was the most the Canucks have scored in one period this season. The Oilers, meanwhile, had not given up four or more goals in any of their last nine games. The first period featured seven goals on a 22 shots, Vancouver's Donald Brashear and Edmonton's Georges Laraque squaring off for a fight three seconds into the game; three goals in a 105-second span; and two lead changes. Oilers goalie Tommy Salo earned the win in a relief stint. He took over after Bill Ranford allowed Cooke's goal that tied the game at 3-3 with 4:03 left in the first period. After allowing Hendrickson's goal on the third shot he faced, Salo shut the door the rest of the way, eventually stopping 17 shots.
Ranford, making his first start in 11 games, has given up 11
goals on the last 39 shots he has faced. In his last outing,
Ranford gave up eight goals on 32 shots in an 8-2 loss to Los
Angeles on Dec. 30.
