VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- A day after Mark Messier downplayed speculation of being traded, the Vancouver Canucks captain showed how much he's worth to the team.

Messier scored twice and set up Mattias Ohlund's game-winner 1:22 into overtime in leading the Canucks to a 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night.

"I think everybody's making a little more out of it than there is there," said Messier, when asked about talk that he will be dealt before next month's NHL trade deadline.

Reminded that he's got a meeting Thursday with Canucks general manager Brian Burke to discuss his future, Messier shrugged and said, "I think you're trying to create a scenario that isn't really going to be there and I wouldn't hold your breath to hear any blockbuster news tomorrow."

Messier had his second two-goal performance in five games.

The Canucks were holding their collective breath against the Flames on Wednesday after squandering 2-0 and 3-2 leads.

With Calgary's Derek Morris in the penalty box for tripping Alexander Mogilny, the Canucks capitalized with their third power-play goal of the night.

Messier, from 30 feet in front of the net, fed a no-look pass to Ohlund, who one-timed a shot from the right circle that trickled through goalie Fred Brathwaite.

It's a play that the Canucks practiced Tuesday.

"We've been working on it," Messier said. "I knew where the players were, and I just tried to freeze Brathwaite to come out at me and then dish it off to either side, and Ohlund put it in."

Ohlund, who also had an assist, said it's passes like that that only a player like Messier can make.

"It's always gold. If you can put every guy out there on the team with (Messier) he's going to score on that pass," Ohlund said. "The way he's playing right now, for being 39, it's just a great opportunity for us to have him."

Mogilny also scored and Andrew Cassels had two assists for the Canucks, who snapped a three-game losing streak. The Canucks also ended a 0-5-1 drought against the Flames, going back to last April.

Bobby Dollas scored twice and Phil Housley had a goal as the Flames dropped to 0-4-2 in their last six games. Despite the loss, the Flames earned one point to move into a ninth-place tie in the Western Conference with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

It was Dollas' second goal of the night that forced overtime, redirecting Martin St. Louis' centering pass with 8:11 left in the third period.

Flames coach Brian Sutter called it a hard fought game that was decided by the officials.

"They scored three power-play goals. It was a border-line call in overtime," Sutter said.

He then complained that officials missed Jeff Shantz being "whacked over the side of the head," just seconds earlier at the other end of the ice.

"If you're going to call it one way, call it the other way. That's the knock against two referees," said Sutter, referring to Mike Leggo and Stephen Walkom.

After a scoreless first period, the teams each scored twice in the second.

Messier had goals 65 seconds apart on consecutive Vancouver power plays, putting the Canucks ahead 2-0 at 11:02.

Housley made it 2-1 when he was set up by Jarome Iginla's centering pass at 12:03. Dollas tied it on a Flames power-play, snapping a 35-footer from the right circle that banked in off the far post.

Valeri Bure, the Flames leading scorer, had an assist to give him 53 points, matching a career high.
