DENVER (AP) -- For the first 27 minutes, it didn't look like Patrick Roy would get win No. 435.

Roy moved into second place on the NHL's career victory list and Joe Sakic scored twice and had an assist as the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-1 Saturday night.

"It was a tough start for us. We didn't get a lot of pucks on net," Sakic said. "We weren't generating shots."

The Avalanche moved within two points of first place Edmonton in the Northwest Division.

Roy stopped 19 shots for his 435th win, snapping a tie with Jacques Plante. He trails only Terry Sawchuk, who earned 447 victories.

"It is nice to be ahead of him now," Roy said. "For me, my objective is seeing our team win games."

Sakic got his fifth goal in three games for the Avalanche. Adam Foote and Dan Hinote also scored for Colorado, which won two straight for the first time since Jan. 15 and 17.

It was Hinote's first career goal.

Pavel Kubina scored a power-play goal for Tampa Bay, which has one win in its last 21 road games. The Lightning have lost three in a row.

"You can't put 20 shots on Patrick Roy and expect to win," Tampa Bay coach Steve Ludzik said. "When you start passing people like Jacques Plante, you are talking legend."

Colorado trailed 1-0 on Kubina's seventh goal. Martin Skoula and Foote drew penalties 52 seconds apart and the Lightning converted when Kubina sent a slap shot over Roy's left shoulder at 6:32.

Sakic tied it 1-1 and was involved in the go-ahead goal in the second period.

Sandis Ozolinsh picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and fed Sakic just inside the blue line. Sakic beat Cloutier with a wrist shot from the slot for his 15th goal at 6:37.

"Ozolinsh made a great play to me and I carried it into the middle," Sakic said. "That seemed to open it up and I shot it."

Foote was credited with his fifth goal at 17:03. Sakic's shot from the slot deflected off the skates of Foote and then Lightning defenseman Bryan Muir and between Cloutier's pads.

"We had trouble getting our legs in the first period," Colorado coach Bob Hartley said. "Our execution in the second and third period was better because we went at the net and made smart decisions."

Hinote and Sakic scored third-period goals.

"I know it was 4-1, but we hung with them," Cloutier said. "The game came down to a couple of bounces and two goals off skates."
