CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- The Calgary Flames put out one of their best efforts of the season, but waited until the third period to do so. The Flames outshot Vancouver 21-3 in the final 20 minutes and twice overcame deficits en route to a 4-4 tie on Saturday night. Marc Savard scored the tying goal late in the period as the Flames salvaged a point from a game that seemed all but lost. After the Flames fought back from a 3-1 deficit earlier in the period only to fall behind again 4-3, Savard deflected Andrei Nazarov's slap shot past goaltender Kevin Weekes at 16:18 to tie it for the final time. "We worked and worked to get it into a tie and even when they scored another one, our bench never got down," said Savard, whose goal was his first of the season. "Everybody kept their head up because we knew we were going to get another chance." Valeri Bure scored two goals for Calgary and Nazarov had the other. Mark Messier, Andrew Cassels, Steve Kariya and Markus Naslund scored for Vancouver. Bill Muckalt added a pair of assists. Calgary had been held to only 11 shots through the first two periods before erupting in the third. "We lost some momentum when we took some penalties in the second half of the game that allowed them to get back into it," Messier said. "They were on the power play so we were defending instead of attacking and it completely turned the game around." Calgary finished with a 34-24 edge in shots. "I don't know if they got tired or we got better but it was a good combination," said Bure, who scored his fourth and fifth goals of the year. The Flames are winless (0-3-2) in their first five home games. Messier's goal was his first of the season and 611th of his career, moving him past Bobby Hull and into seventh spot on the all-time list. Sixth on the list is Mario Lemieux, with 613. After goals by Nazarov and Bure early in the third tied the game 3-3, Naslund picked up a loose puck and fired a high shot over the glove of goaltender Fred Brathwaite to give Vancouver the lead again at 7:40. The opening 40 minutes were dominated by Vancouver, which is kicking off a season-high six-game road trip. The Canucks had opened the season with a successful five-game homestand in which they took seven of a possible 10 points.
