Kings put 'Hawks back in loss column

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

CHICAGO (AP) -- Stephane Fiset was a busy goaltender for the Los Angeles Kings, and not all of it had to do with just stopping the puck.

Fiset made 35 saves as the Kings won their fourth straight with a 3-1 decision over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night.

And in helping Los Angeles gain its ninth straight victory over Chicago, he also set up Brad Chartrand's first NHL goal -- on a shorthanded breakaway -- midway through the second period.

After making a save during one of six Blackhawk power plays, Fiset flipped the puck toward center ice. It bounced to Chartrand, who raced the length of the ice and beat Chicago goaltender Jocelyn Thibault to make it 2-0.

"I had in my mind to shoot the puck all the way down," Fiset said. "I missed the shot, but it went on (Chartrand's) tape. I was pretty happy."

"I could see the play developing," Chartrand said. "Fizz made a great play. He lofted it up and I read it. I was just glad to get the puck on net and didn't want to do anything fancy."

Glen Murray scored in the first period for the Kings and Rob Blake scored in the second. In 15 career games against Chicago, Murray has 10 goals and five assists.

"I don't know what it is. I guess I just get all the bounces against this team," Murray said. "It's too bad we don't play them more often."

Chicago, which outshot the Kings 36-22 Saturday, has not defeated Los Angeles since Feb. 1, 1997.

The Blackhawks' Alex Zhamnov scored midway through the third period to ruin Fiset's bid for a second shutout this season.

Chicago had won its two previous games after an eight-game (0-4-4) winless streak to start the season. On Saturday night, the Blackhawks wasted all six of their power-play chances and surrendered Chartrand's shorthanded goal.

The Kings, meanwhile, had just one power-play chance and failed to convert it.

"We tried to build on our last couple of games, but we got beat by Fiset on the other end," Thibault said. "That was the story of the game."

"I thought we had a good effort tonight," Zhamnov added. "We had a lot of scoring chances, but sometime it happens where the puck doesn't go in."

Los Angeles led 1-0 after the first period on Murray's goal at 3:00 following a rush into the Chicago zone with Donald Audette.

Despite being outshot 28-17 after two periods, Los Angeles extended its lead to 3-0 after 40 minutes.

Chartrand made it 2-0 at 7:21 of the second period by converting his shorthanded breakaway. Blake then fooled Thibault with a low shot from the right circle at 10:25 to extend the Kings' lead to 3-0.

Zhamnov scored from the edge of the crease at 9:22 of the third period to make it 3-1.
