KANATA, Ontario (AP) -- Owen Nolan and the San Jose Sharks got back to basics against the Ottawa Senators.

"We're kind of getting back to realizing it took hard work and patience when we were winning early," Nolan said after the Sharks' 4-1 victory Thursday night.

San Jose, coming off a 4-1 victory over Montreal on Tuesday night, improved to 2-3-1 on its seven-game road trip.

Vincent Damphousse scored his seventh goal of the season to give San Jose a 3-1 lead with 3:45 remaining, and Dave Lowry added his first goal of the season with 2:40 left.

"The big difference was we didn't make any mistakes on the blue line," Damphousse said.

Alexander Korolyuk and Marco Sturm also scored to help the Sharks to their first road victory over the Senators.

Nolan moved within two points of Pittsburgh's Jaromir Jagr in the NHL scoring race with an assist on Damphousse's goal. Nolan has 14 goals and 17 assists.

Kevin Dineen scored for the Senators, who tied the Sharks in four previous home meetings.

"We certainly didn't lose for lack of chances, we had 10," Dineen said. "It was a very frustrating game. We were giving up chances down the stretch to try to score."

Dineen opened the scoring 5:19 into the second period, and Korolyuk tied it with 6:20 remaining. Sturm's short-handed goal gave the Sharks the lead with four minutes left in the period.

"It was an even game but we couldn't score," said Ottawa forward Magnus Arvedson, whose club held a 29-24 shot advantage.
