RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Hampered by numerous injuries, the Boston Bruins trapped their way to a road victory.

The Bruins allowed Carolina only 13 shots Monday night to earn a 2-1 victory, after the Hurricanes had at least 20 shots in home wins over Tampa Bay, Ottawa and Dallas.

"The way we forechecked and the way we had our trap on them limited their offense, which in return helped us get some offense going," said Shawn Bates, who picked up his second assist of the season.

Boston, down five players because of injuries, was looking to rebound from a 3-0 loss at home against Washington on Saturday.

"We showed character tonight," Boston coach Pat Burns said. "To come back with a little bit of a decimated lineup that we have, to come back like we did tonight, our guys are really on top of things."

Jason Allison scored the game-winner at 3:40 of the third period to break a 1-1 tie. Allison pushed the puck from the right side of the goal line by a defender, and shot it high past goaltender Arturs Irbe for his second goal of the season.

Boston had tied the score at 1 at 17:06 in the second period on Dave Andreychuk's 14th goal. Andreychuk came from near the left faceoff circle to pick up Bates' pass and slipped the puck by Irbe.

"Defensively, their coverage is good because we cycled the puck pretty well," Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice said. "It's not like we didn't have the time, we just didn't get it in the net."

Martin Gelinas' first goal of the season at 7:42 in the first period gave Carolina the lead. Byron Ritchie passed the puck from behind the net to Tommy Westlund in front of goaltender Byron Dafoe, and Gelinas flicked the puck into the empty left side of the net.

Gelinas, who has 182 goals in his 11-year NHL career, had gone 23 games dating back to last March without scoring. The assist was the first of Ritchie's career and Westlund's fourth for the season.

Carolina's Glen Wesley missed his first game of the season with a groin injury he sustained Saturday against Dallas.
