Sabres win in OT on Grosek's goal

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- The Buffalo Sabres are finding success in overtime.

Michal Grosek scored with 2:34 left in the extra session as the Sabres beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 Sunday night.

Grosek's backhanded centering pass hit off Tampa Bay defenseman Ben Clymer's skate and went past Lightning goalie Dan Cloutier.

"It was a little bit lucky," Grosek said. "Actually, I tried to pass it to Stu Barnes, but it hit the other guy's skate and went into the net. It's never a bad play when you put it on the net."

The Sabres are 3-0-2 in overtime this season. Buffalo also improved to 4-8-1 on the road.

"I thought we played nasty and played ugly ... that's how you're going to win (on the road)," Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff said. "We fought the elements all night. We didn't get many calls, but we fought off all the calls that went against us."

The Lightning, who entered the game with the NHL's third-ranked power play unit at home, went 1-for-9 with the advantage.

The Sabres were unsuccessful on four power-plays and have just two man advantage goals in their last 61 chances against Tampa Bay.

"We should have had the two points tonight," Cloutier said. "In this league, special teams will win you games and lose you games."

Cloutier stopped 24 of the 27 shots he faced.

Buffalo back-up goalie Dwayne Roloson, who won his first game since Apr. 6, stopped 23 shots.

"It was a low scoring game, like it should be," Roloson said. "We took away their scoring chances. I thought we played a good game on defense."

Tampa Bay's Petr Svoboda had tied the game at 2 midway through the third period. Svoboda scored on a slapshot from the blue line during a power-play.

Vincent Lecavalier assisted on Svoboda's goal and has two goals and five assists during a four-game point streak.

Buffalo rookie Maxim Afinogenov, who has five goals and four assists in nine NHL games, broke a 1-1 tie with a blast from the left-circle with 83 seconds left in the second period.

Richard Smehlik snapped a 23-goal-scoring drought as he put the Sabres up 1-0 in the first period.

Robert Petrovicky tied the game at 1 at 7:27 of the second period.

Tampa Bay defenseman Andrei Zyuzin left in the third period after re-aggravating a shoulder surgery and did not return.
