SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) -- The Florida Panthers didn't need many shots to beat the Washington Capitals.

Despite being outshot 31-6 the final two periods and 36-14 overall, the Panthers defeated the Capitals 2-1 Saturday night as goalie Trevor Kidd improved his record to 12-4-2.

"We suffered a disappointing loss Friday night," Kidd said, referring to a 2-1 loss to Atlanta. "When people look tomorrow, they won't notice (the shots). The important thing is that we got the two points. I try to have a huge game every night. No more tonight, than last night."

Florida improved its home record to 11-2-1 with the victo ry.

"I'm sure the Washington coaches are sitting over there wondering how they lost the game," Panthers coach Terry Murray said. "It was Trevor Kidd. He was really good tonight. We knew he had to be. He answered the call."

As did Scott Mellanby, who snapped a 1-1 game early in the third period, helping the Panthers to their eighth victory in 11 games.

Mellanby's game-winner came at 3:10 of the third when he took a loose puck near the blue line, skated around defenseman Alexei Tezikov, and beat goalie Olaf Kolzig high to the glove side.

"It's nice to get one like that once in a while," Mellanby said. "I had to watch the replay a couple of times to believe it was really me."

Pavel Bure scored the game's first goal for Florida at 12:17 of the opening period. Bure took the puck at the left boards near the red line and raced past Jeff Halpern at the blue line. From a tough angle in the faceoff circle, Bure ripped a slap shot between the legs of Kolzig.

It was the 10th goal of the year for Bure, who has 16 points in 17 games. The Panthers are 8-0-1 when Bure scores a goal, and 9-0-2 when he has at least one point.

Washington tied it at 5:12 of the second period on Steve Konowalchuk's power-play goal. Calle Johansson faked a slap shot, electing instead to pass to a wide open Konowalchuk. Konowalchuk one-timed a low shot by Kidd from the middle of the face-off circle.

"I think we played hard and we outshot them 3-1," said Adam Oates, who assisted on Washington's lone goal. "Their goalie stole the game for them."

The Panthers were lucky to escape the second period tied. Kidd came up with two huge saves just after a Florida power play expired. Brendan Witt came out of the penalty box and took a clearing pass near center ice for a breakaway, but Kidd stopped Witt's shot with his pad. Seconds later, Witt had the puck near the goalie area, and again Kidd denied him.

"I came out of the box and thought I had Kidd, and then on the second shot I didn't think he saw it," Witt said. "Kidd was staying down and we never got the puck up on him. If we got it up, we would have scored a couple more goals."

During another Florida power play, Oates led a two-on-one break, but Kidd came up with a pad save at 17:53 of the second period.

Kidd, who started back-to-back nights, came up with another key save on Halpern's slap shot from 15 feet just minutes after Mellanby's goal. With eight minutes to go, Witt's wrist shot hit the right post, preserving the victory for Kidd.

"What can you say?" Washington coach Ron Wilson said. "We played well and their goalie stopped us from scoring. I mean, what else can you say?"

The Panthers aren't managing much better offensively during the power play. They managed only one shot on goal in three power plays and are 2-for-39 on the power play in their last nine games.
