SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Brendan Shanahan is no stranger to game-winning goals. The San Jose Sharks let down, and he took advantage.

Shanahan had two goals and an assist as Detroit beat San Jose 4-3 Monday night, the Red Wings third win this season over the Sharks.

Sergei Fedorov and Tomas Holmstrom also scored for the Red Wings, who have won five of six.

Owen Nolan scored twice for San Jose, which lost its third straight, to move into a tie with Pittsburgh's Jaromir Jagr for the league lead with 25 goals.

The Red Wings have a 26-6-2 career mark against the Sharks.

Shanahan scored the game-winner on a breakaway with 12:17 remaining in the game. He stole the puck from San Jose defenseman Mike Rathje and beat San Jose goalie Steve Shields to the upper right corner.

"He looked like he got shot out of a cannon on that breakaway," said Detroit's Pat Verbeek. "His eyes lit up and he was gone. He made an awesome shot. He couldn't have made a better shot."

Shanahan moved into a tie for the league lead with Phoenix's Jeremy Roenick with his sixth game-winning goal.

"I was trying to get the puck to Nolan, but his stick happened to be in the right spot," Rathje said. "Stuff happens. It was a great game and we got the short end of the stick."

With a two-man advantage, Fedorov scored his 10th goal to give the Red Wings a 3-2 lead 35 seconds into the third period. Shanahan passed across the net to Igor Larionov, who took a shot. The puck bounced straight back to Larionov, who tapped it over to Fedorov, who had an open shot from the right side of the net.

"I thought we were pretty good," Sharks coach Darryl Sutter said. "We worked hard, but we were up against a heck of a team. Their goaltender played great. He made the difference."

Detroit coach Scotty Bowman agreed that it was a good effort by each team.

"I thought both goalies just played outstanding," he said. "There were a lot of scoring opportunities. It was a great hockey game."

Nolan scored his second goal with three minutes gone in the final period to tie the game at 3. Mike Ricci made a centering pass to Nolan, who beat Manny Legace to the glove side.

Ricci has a point in five straight games.

Nolan also tied the game at 2, on the power play, with 8:42 remaining in the second period. Vincent Damphousse gave Nolan a lead pass and he slipped it through Legace's legs.

"If we had more efforts like this, we'd have a better record," Nolan said. "That's a talented team, but if we work hard we can compete with them. I thought the game could have gone either way."

Detroit had taken a 2-1 lead, scoring twice within 1:43 of the second period.

Shanahan scored his 18th goal on a power play and Holmstrom scored his fifth goal to give the Red Wings the lead.

"It was a hard-fought game," Shanahan said. "We did battle back against a good team."

Alexander Korolyuk scored San Jose's first goal.
