Crawford locks up spot with win over Sens

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Vancouver's Marc Crawford and Ottawa's Jacques Martin will coach the NHL All-Star teams, with Crawford earning the Western Conference spot Wednesday night with a victory over Martin's Senators.

Crawford edged Detroit rookie coach Dave Lewis, who will be the assistant coach. Martin will coach the East All-Stars, with Philadelphia's Ken Hitchcock serving as the assistant.

The head coach and assistant coach of the two teams with the best points percentages through Wednesday's games determined the positions in each conference.

Martin and Hitchcock clinched their spots before Wednesday.

The All-Star game will be played in Sunrise, Fla. -- home of the Florida Panthers -- on Feb. 2.

Crawford entered the day on top, but needed the Canucks to beat Martin's Senators to seal it. Vancouver (25-11-5) defeated Ottawa 6-4 to reach a winning percentage of .671.

"It's a great honor for our organization, and I'm the one that gets the benefit from the play of the team right now,'' Crawford said. "I certainly have to give them the credit because they're the guys that go out and play.

"But it's a great reflection of where we're at right now.''

Lewis, in his first season behind the bench of the Stanley Cup champions, locked up his spot on the bench when the Red Wings beat Florida 2-1 in overtime. Lewis has guided Detroit to a 24-10-7-1 (.667) mark in place of Scotty Bowman, who retired following the Cup victory.

Dallas first-year coach Dave Tippett needed Vancouver or Detroit to lose on Wednesday to claim a spot on the Western Conference bench. The Stars, who were idle, are 23-10-10-1 (.648).

Martin has done a remarkable job with the Senators (25-10-5-1), who lead the East while financial troubles surround the team. Ottawa's loss to Vancouver was just the Senators' fourth in regulation in 29 games.

The Ottawa players have not received their pay checks that were due on Jan. 1.

Hitchcock has led the Flyers to a 21-10-8-1 record in his first season in Philadelphia. He took over in the offseason following his dismissal as Dallas' coach last season.

Hitchcock coached in the All-Star game from 1997-99 when he was with Dallas. The Flyers carry a four-game winning streak into Thursday's game at the New York Islanders.

"You're there because of the way the team plays,'' Hitchcock said. "We've played well lately. It's an honor but when you've been there before, you understand how long the season is so the rest is something you always look at, too.''
