DENVER -- Colorado Avalanche forward Peter Forsberg will be sidelined for seven to 10 days following a hard check by the Vancouver Canucks' Todd Bertuzzi.

Forsberg, who sustained a mild concussion and a cut near right eye that required seven stitches, was hurt in the second period of Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Canucks. He will miss Sunday's All-Star Game in Toronto, coach Bob Hartley announced Wednesday.

Patrik Elias, who recently set a New Jersey Devils' record by scoring points in 15 straight games, will replace Peter Forsberg on the World All-Star team's roster.

"I've got a huge headache, but everything is good," Forsberg said Thursday. "The eye doesn't hurt at all. It's just hard to be out and not be able to play. I'm getting used to it, I guess."

Bertuzzi was assessed a 5-minute major penalty and a game misconduct, but Hartley renewed his calls for the NHL to protect its star players.

"They are our assets," Hartley said.

Forsberg missed 23 games at the beginning of this season because of a shoulder injury sustained when Dallas Stars' Richard Matvichuk blindsided him in last season's playoffs, Hartley said. Forsberg said he doesn't think Bertuzzi meant to hurt him.

Since returning to the lineup, Forsberg has recorded 10 goals and 25 assists for 35 points in 28 games. In his first game back, he registered two goals and three assists in a 7-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Nov. 27.

Forsberg, who led Colorado in scoring last season with 97 points, was named to the World All-Star squad as a reserve after finishing second in the voting for starting center behind countryman Mats Sundin of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Elias leads the Devils with 22 goals, with 16 coming in the last 17 games. The left wing had 15 goals and nine assists in his streak which was ended in Detroit on Saturday.

The All Star appearance will be the first for the 23-year-old Elias, a native of the Czech Republic.
