CALGARY, Alberta -- Calgary Flames defenseman Denis
Gauthier is expected to miss a month after learning Friday that
he broke his left hand eight days ago in a fight with Jamie
Pushor of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Gauthier, 24, injured himself in Calgary's third game of the
season. He played the next two games with what team officials
thought was a deep bruise, but was placed on injured reserve on
Sunday.
It is another setback for the 20th overall pick in the 1995
draft. The bruising 6-2, 210-pounder missed the last 30 games
of the 1999-00 season with a hip injury.
Gauthier has one assist, a minus-1 rating and 11 penalty minutes
this season, and four goals, six assists and 145 penalty minutes
in 209 NHL games since debuting in 1997-98.
The Flames welcomed back captain Steve Smith on Saturday night.
Smith had not played since suffering a career-threatening neck
injury in January.
