The NHL sent representatives to Dallas to hand count fan ballots Friday night to determine two NHL
All-Star Game starting positions -- defense on the World All-Stars and wing on
the North America All-Stars.
Balloting was set to conclude at Friday night's sold-out Detroit Red Wings-Dallas Stars game at
Reunion Arena. Each NHL team gets 10 home dates at which fans can vote, and
the Friday game in Dallas was the final one before the Feb. 4 All-Star Game at Denver.
As of the most recent balloting update, defensemen Sandis Ozolinsh of
the Hurricanes and Sergei Zubov of the Stars were separated by less than
2,100 votes for the World defense position. Stars wing Brett Hull was less
than 16,500 votes behind Theo Fleury of the Rangers for the North American
wing spot.
In the end, the votes from the home crowd weren't enough to get Hull or Zubov named starters.
The hand count tookplace between the second and third periods of the game, and the results were announced at halftime of Saturday's Virginia-Duke/UNLV-Utah men's basketball coverage on ABC.
