NEW YORK -- Sergei Fedorov of the Detroit Red Wings
and Alexander Mogilny of the New Jersey Devils were added Wednesday to the
World Team for the 51st NHL All-Star Game, setting up a reunion with Florida Panthers right wing Pavel Bure.
The three
were linemates on the gold medal-winning Soviet team at the 1989 World
Junior Championship, and they will appear on the same roster for the first time
since when the All-Stars face off Sunday, Feb. 4 in Denver (2:30 p.m.
ET, ABC).
Besides Fedorov and Mogilny, four other
players who rank among the NHL's top 15 scorers were added
Wednesday to the World roster.
Fedorov and Mogilny will be appearing as
All-Stars for the first time since 1996.
The North American team's reserves were announced Tuesday,
highlighted by Hall of Famer and Penguins owner Mario Lemieux, who
ended his 3½-year retirement last month.
Calgary, Montreal, Nashville, the New York Islanders and
expansion clubs Columbus and Minnesota have no players on either
All-Star roster.
Of the 15 reserves chosen Wednesday, eight will be making their
All-Star debuts: forwards Marian Hossa (Ottawa), Alexei Kovalev
(Pittsburgh) and Fredrik Modin (Tampa Bay); defensemen Sergei
Gonchar (Washington), Janne Niinimaa (Edmonton) and Marcus
Ragnarsson (San Jose); and goalies Roman Cechmanek (Philadelphia)
and Evgeni Nabokov (San Jose).
Hossa, Kovalev, Vancouver's Markus Naslund and Los Angeles'
Zigmund Palffy all are among the league's scoring leaders.
Toronto captain Mats Sundin, Phoenix defenseman Teppo Numminen
and Ottawa forward Radek Bonk round out the World team.
The reserves are chosen by the league's hockey operations
department, in consultation with general managers.
The starting lineup for the World team, selected by fans,
features goalie Dominik Hasek (Buffalo), defensemen Nicklas
Lidstrom (Detroit) and Sandis Ozolinsh (Carolina), and forwards
Jaromir Jagr (Pittsburgh), Peter Forsberg (Colorado) and Bure
(Florida).
The team will be coached by Ottawa's Jacques Martin.
