ZAGREB, Croatia -- Croatian canoeist Matija Ljubek, winner of gold medals at the Montreal and Los Angeles Olympic games, was shot dead by his brother-in-law in his hometown Wednesday, state news agency Hina reported.

It said the killer shot Ljubek in the eastern town of Belisce before killing a Croatian army officer and wounding a woman. He was later arrested.

Police said family disagreements were a possible motive, the agency said. Ljubek was a member of the Croatian Olympic Committee and had recently returned from the Sydney games.
