MOUTIER, Switzerland -- The International Gymnastics Federation rejected an appeal by world champion Alina Kabaeva and runner-up Irina Tchachina and upheld the Russians' one-year ban for doping.
Kabaeva and Tchachina were suspended in February after testing positive for a diuretic sometimes used by athletes to shed weight quickly or to mask other substances. The suspension is retroactive to the date of the test -- last Aug. 31 at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia.
Kabaeva and Tchachina have the right to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport within 30 days.
The international federation also ordered the gymnasts to return their medals from the rhythmic gymnastics world championships at Madrid in October. The commission also suggested that the organizers of the Goodwill Games revise the results and deprive the two gymnasts of their prizes. |
